Hellopplz shows the Winners How It’s Done

And the 2nd week of the elxam League Knock-Out Cup is finished! An interesting round, with a major upset with the Gold Coast Suns defeating the hapless Port Adelaide. So were there any huge upsets this week?

The top 2 seeds Marcz and Flame continue through to the next round, but amazingly are the only remaining of the top 8 seeds, 12th seed CFC 1979 can consider himself the luckiest winner with a score of only 1850 over 5th seeded naste’s 1805. The highest score of the round goes to Hellopplz, ruling him out of the Loser’s Cup running, while I’m ashamed to say I left my Saints players on my bench and it cost me dearly.

Hellopplz backs up his high score in DT with the high score in SC this week also! Alas, a week too late. The rivalry between CrowsFan and Alex7089 lived up to the hype with CrowsFan winning by only 2 points. #1 seed Cruiseon gained some respect, edging out McRooster. Roo boys! continues his fairy tale, edging out the bb/Luigi combo by 22 points to find himself in the final eight.

Alex7089, CrowsFan rekindle Vic-AllStar rivalry

Despite struggling in the Dream Team competition after posting a dismal 1639 in the first round of the Knock-Out Cup, Alex7089 is more confident about his SC prospects.

“It would appear I have taken care of Boomz, bad luck Boomzie and good luck in the losers cup ” Alex7089 said, after defeating 28th seed Boomz 2312-2138.

Alex7089 next plays 12th seed CrowsFan – and since only 13 points separated the two in week 1, it promises to be an epic encounter.

“I’m coming for you next CF (CrowsFan), should be a ripper of a game.”

CrowsFan, not one for formalities, ignited the Victorian/All-Star rivalry with this inflammatory comment:

“You’re going down AFEV (Alex7089) you filthy vic ”

In the DT comp, unlikely victors pyronerd (seeded 26th) and hawka26 (seeded 23rd) face off for a place in the final 8. Whatever the result, it will be a great story.

Junktimer’s Double Tops Table

Marcz’s three week reign as the #1 Fantasy player on The League has ended, after Junktimer scored the highest in both DT and SC in Round 4. A very respectable 2126 in DT puts him marginally behind Marcz (53 points), but a League record 2,446 catapults him to a perfect 100 in SC.

Junktimer has enjoyed a superb season so far winning 5 of 6 DT matches, being undefeated in SC and winning both first rounds of the elimination competitions. His only loss has been to MTTY by only 8 DT points.

A reminder….

24 of The League’s coaches are competing in both the SC and DT competition. So who among them can be considered the best amongst the fantasy comps?

Due to the different scoring systems, it isn’t quite fair to simply add both competitions together and see who has the highest score. If this was the case, SC specialists would have the advantage as in general SC is a higher scoring game.

In the early stages, it does not make that much of a difference. But what I have done is given everyone a base score. The highest scoring player in both SC and DT are given a score of 100. Everybody else is given a score relative to that.

For example, if the highest scoring player has 20,000 points total. He gets a score of 100. Somebody else has 19,000 points total, as 19,000 is 95% of 20,000, he gets a score of 95.

Therefore, the maximum score a player can have is 200.

Cruiseon Crashes Out and Heartbreak for HillHero13

Well, how did we all fare in the first of the 5 bye rounds we will be having in 2011?

Some better than others, I see! Yours truly had a stinker with as many as 6 starting 22 players out of my SC team, but in the end both Boomz and dyslta05 were too good for me.

The Dream Team side of things saw 32nd seed HillHero13 ALMOST pull off a remarkable upset, falling only 19 points short of top seed Marcz. The top 6 seeds went through in the end, however; with seventh seed Prospector_1 the highest seed falling out. Congratulations also to 8-6 Suited whose loss could be partly excused after the arrival of a new addition to the family arriving during the week. Well done Shaggy!

In a huge upset roo boys! stayed true to his word, and pulled off an 82 point victory over the top seeded Cruiseon and thusly inheriting the top seed’s draw! The closest match of the round was a 1 point victory for Barlow 21 over HillHero13, rubbing salt into poor Hilly’s wounds after his close DT defeat.

So who plays who next week? Remember, this is based on a seeded draw (much like the Australian Tennis Open) so if somebody defeats a higher seed, they take over that seed’s draw. During the week Hellopplz suggested a “Loser’s Cup” and that has also been shown below. Every position from 1st to 32nd is up for grabs, and if you manage to lose 5 matches you’ll get the prestige of taking home the Loser’s Cup. (Damn, I wish I was playing now – I could win that! – Ed)

roo boys! lines up top seed

Despite being seeded last, SC league coach roo boys! is confident of causing an upset against top seeded Cruiseon. In fact, some commentators believe that quotes from the young coach border on arrogant.

“Easy win against top seed this week!”

He did make an addendum however.

“Well, I’m really going to have to lift from the lowest score in the League history last week!”

Cruiseon gave credence to the upset theory however, revealing he is not confident of living up to his top-seeded status.

“Wow, I could be the first top seed in the history of the Elxam Knockout Cup to be knocked out in the first round!”

Although said tongue-in-cheek, one wonders how seriously the competition will be taken as a multitude of byes wreaks havoc through the League. Captains will be rested, rookies will be tested out, and some teams may not field full teams.

But, when it is all said and done, this is the first bit of silverware available for The League. Enjoy all!

The Knock-Out Cup (Week 1)

Well, we have three weeks to fine-tune our teams, milk our cash-cows, wield the axe or simply just sit back. What we don’t have are any competitive matches.

Until now, that is!

In Rounds 4, 5, 6, 16 and 19 a Knock-Out Cup will be played. The concept is simple – win 5 matches and win the Cup! Each team is seeded according to the amount of points they have scored in the opening 3 rounds (NOT ladder position), and play-off in elimination. This isn’t Victoria v All-Stars, this is simply individual glory! This is the League’s equivalent to the NAB Cup.

The Round From Hell

Round 3 – could it have been any worse for most of us? Guns like Murphy, Deledio, Broughton, Enright, Grimes, Sylvia and Didak were 7 of the many who had a below average output. In my case I had pine riders outscoring those on the field – to give you an idea of how strange it was, the most points scored in round 3 were as follows:

Supercoach winner Made Men tallied 2512 points, his overall position before posting this monster was 134,814.

In Dream Team coolestshoes won the $1000 prize with a score of 2288, his rank prior to this score was 90,584.

What can we take out of that? Anomalies happen and that’s about all I can chalk it up to – although with St Kilda, Western Bulldogs and the Brisbane Lions off with byes this week, could it be a trend in the coming weeks?

For those chasing overall – will you trade to compensate the byes or will you put your faith in the bench you have created and hope for the best? If you’re only aiming for league wins, it’s still an exciting time with your cash cow price rises and plummeting premiums in your sights. Even after a big game on the weekend, Joel Selwood is set to be a value buy with a breakeven of 175 in Dream Team and 224 in Supercoach he should be at his cheapest after his round 6 bye. Will he be in your crosshairs?

GUTS & GLORY- Player Analysis- After Round 3 – Backs

Well, we are getting ready for a break in league fixtures now – and with the first price rises coming up, I am going to do an analysis of my players thus far for SC. I will start with the backs (note below will be in the order of my most likely starting line up for Round 4).

Backs

Bryce Gibbs – Started the season very well by scoring very highly and earning himself the new role of Vice Captain at the GUTS & GLORY SC team, however a poor performance overshadowed his great early form.

Rating- 9/10

Brett Deledio – Started off with an average score and didn’t look interested at all in Round 1, then he bounced back with what was arguably his best performance of his career. In Round 3, however, his team was flogged and he seemed to be playing a run with role on various opponents; this resulted in a poor score.

Rating- 7/10

Greg Broughton – He’s been consistent but the wrong kind of consistent: in that he has been scoring high 80’s to low 90’s. Still a pretty good average but looks to be playing a more KP role than rebounding role. Has also looked like scoring poorly and has done so in DT.

Rating- 7.5/10

Heath Shaw – Has been super-consistent in my backline and has been a great pick up. His 2nd game score was a little low but Mick did sub him, so not Shaw’s fault.

Rating- 8.5/10

Jack Grimes – Has been having patchy games. He looks to be having 2 great quarters in terms of points and 2 bad quarters, meaning he hasn’t taken that leap to top premium defender.

Rating- 7.5/10

Nick Lower – Has been given one of the rookie back spots on field in all 3 weeks so far for me. First week was very impressive. Second week, well… he played Geelong so he is forgiven as was Barlow last year. And then he churned out an 80 from an average performance – so has been a little up and down with his form thus far.

Rating- 7.5/10

Nick Duigan – Has been a consistent and impressive rookie with only one of his scores being below par. Has been good when Yarran has, it seems, as they switch play to each other in the backline a fair bit.

Rating- 7.5/10

Danny Stanley – Played 2 games. Seems to drift in and out of games at times – kicks his 1 or 2 goals a game which lifts his points and gets some time in the middle of the park. Has been consistent but is really just on my bench to earn some cash.

Rating- 6.5/10

Andy Otten – Yet to play a game on field for me. Was going to in Round 1 but with talk of him being sub, Duigan took his spot. Not very impressive thus far as he doesn’t seem to be playing the same role. He’s even been tagging at times I believe.

Rating- 5/10

Brendan Goddard – Has scored tons and done his job but hasn’t been bringing out those super-premium performances, and has lost his Vice Captaincy. Need him to improve for those extra points.

Rating- 9/10

Junktimer Claims SC Top Spot

A quick reminder of how this works. Each round, each teams play one match against someone from their own conference and against someone from the opposing conference. The top 16 teams play off in the finals.

The stats page also gives some more details of the tale of woe we’ve all been going through.

Dream Team

Flame maintains his #1 spot on the ladder though Marcz, the only other undefeated team, is very close behind. Climbing into the top 16 are browny_wce, chrisuzz and 8-6 Suited while reesbr, MajorLazer and Fletch74 fall out. HillHero13 recorded his first two victories, climbing off the bottom to 26th spot, while DazBurg finds himself last as the only team to not have recorded a win.

Worrying for the Victorians is that the All-Stars hold 12 of the top 16 spots.

hawka26 and Cruiseon turn the tables

And now we enter a bit of a break from the regular competition. 3 rounds of torture, dud rookies and falling premiums… or is that just me?

Round 3 belongs to hawka26 (2012) and Cruiseon (2273) in DT and SC respectively.

4 points for each victory (2 points for a tie).

Dream Team

A couple of disastrous performances in the Victorian camp derailed this round with Alex7089 and Fletch74 both scoring below 1800. However, hawka26 restored some pride for the Victorians, incredibly being the ONLY coach in the league to score over 2000 points. Hawka26 earns 8 points for this effort, while RobsOverAchieverss took advantage of Fletch74’s poor performance with a 168 point victory earning him 8 points for the All-Stars. The final result – a 52-21 victory to the All-Stars.

Also of note is pyronerd and chrisuzz played out a 1915-all draw, the first in League history!

Finally, the Victorians turn the table! Cruiseon leads the way, scoring a round high 2273 and recording the highest margin to earn the Victorians a maximum 12 points. With a score below 1900, roo boys! had a match to forget, and in the end it was a thrashing – the Victorians running away victors 56-17.

However, the biggest upset came in the All-Star conference. Marcz (the highest point scorer in SC coming into round 2) and ossie 85 (the lowest scorer) faced each other, with the Antelopes registering their first win.

Valkorum compares Vics to Ostriches

A strong outburst from All-Star coach Valkorum has caused shock-waves throughout the elxam League, with tension boiling over inflammatory comments from both sides, with the All-Stars recruiting policy especially questioned.

Valkorum, currently ranked 6th on the DT ladder and long-time critic of the perceived Victorian-centric media, questioned the courage of the Victorians –

“All the Vics have gone in to hiding ’cause they are shower.”

– before stepping up the rhetoric even further:

“There is still another 22 weeks of this total annihilation and they want to be like an ostrich and bury their heads in the sand.”

But the Victorians had also turned on their own, with the high profile Alex7089 laying down an ultimatum about Victorian form and how the team needs to lift after two disappointing weeks.

“Those who don’t shall be banished to All Stardom like BBoy and Luigi were!” Alex7089 exclaimed.

Luigi197, on a high after scoring the highest in SC in round 2, replied:

“We got rejected by the Vics; You thought we weren’t good enough. You underestimated us.”

Match of the round in Dream Team would be between top ranked Flame and third ranked McRooster, while in SuperCoach Marcz and Prospector_1 looks an appetising match-up. Full fixtures below!

Panic Stations

Forums are buzzing this week with trade talks prior to round 3 lockout with prices set to soar and some eager beavers have committed a cardinal sin in having not waited for teams and traded already, highly touted rookies like Swallow, Conca and Gaff arent really cutting the cheese compared cheap rookie priced options like Curnow, Tapscott and Liberatore…

Moving on to mid pricers Kennedy, Foley and Anthony are also on the chopping block for these rookies or even a swap for the mid price bolters such as Shuey, Ward and Cotchin, with Anthony a victim of the new sub rule which curtailed his round 2 score, the new rule has thrown many a spanner in the works over the first 2 rounds and is set to give us all grey hair by season’s end…

Premium prices set to plummet on Bruce, Didak, Gilbert and Duffield also have some coaches sideways shopping, its panic stations right now with some crazy ideas floating around, what will you do this week as lockout looms? Will the pressure force you into making a mistake or a masterstroke?

Perfect Double For Marcz

Marcz high score in DT this week proppelled him to have both the most points in DT and SC for those who play both games in The League.

Meaning Marcz currently has a score of 200 (the maximum you can get) and tops the Fantasy Champion Ladder.

McRooster has rocketed to #2, while Prospector_1 has slipped out of the top 4. HillHero13 has made up quite a bit of ground, but is still firmly last.

For example, if the highest scoring player has 20,000 points total. He gets a score of 100. Somebody else has 19,000 points total, as 19,000 is 95% of 20,000, he gets a score of 95.
