Round 1 Fixture!

Well, welcome to round 1!

A kazillion matches to go through, all of Round 1’s matches are listed below.

I’ve also attached the complete League v League fixture here:

FixtureReleased2012

This spreadsheet DOES NOT include who each coach plays in there own league. That fixture won’t be released until the Dream Team and SuperCoach websites release them, most likely during or at the end of round 1.

How does League v League work? Much like last year. Where a coach from one league, plays a coach from another. The difference being is that instead of 2 leagues, we have 3 in Dream Team and 4 in SuperCoach.

There are now 81 points available, as opposed to last year’s 73, due to the fact leagues have increased from 16 to 18. How does point scoring work?

Well, each league gets:

4 points for each win (there are 18 matches, so 18 times 4 = 72 points available)
The highest scoring league on total points gets an extra 4 points
The highest scoring coach gets an extra 4 points
The coach that inflicts the biggest margin gets an extra 4 points
The lowest scoring coach loses 3 points

For a total of 81. The League with the most points wins.

In Dream Team, each league will play twice a round. In SuperCoach, three times a round. At the end of Round 19, the league with the most number of wins will win the League cup.

Individually, each team will be ranked as per the normal ladder. There are 54 teams in Dream Team, you play everyone once, for a total of 53 matches. There are 72 teams in SuperCoach, you play everyone once, for a total of 71 matches. The top 16 will play off in elimination in the finals of each competition.

The first week of the Knock-Out Cup is also this week, and the full fixture for that is also attached in the spreadsheet.

The SC and DT website is now open! Which means the 2011 database, which has your ranking from last year, has been wiped. Fortunately, the data was extracted before hand, and are attached below. These are big files, so enjoy 🙂 A Couple of other spreadsheets also attached.

2003 excel versions for SC and DT selecting sheets

Come to my attention some of you need files saved as 1997-2003 Excel files! My bad, here they are:

Note: To make them work, but a number “1” in the “Select” column

Updated SC Substitute Data

A Dream Team maybe in the works also!

The great Patrician has updated his original spreadsheet.

See, attached:

DT Team Selector

For those who like Spreadsheets over web-based stuff, here is a Dream Team team selector for you to enjoy:

Dream Team 2012

Just put the number “1” in the select column to choose players!

Unlike the SC one (which Purple 77 updated and can be found here SuperCoach Selecting 2012), this is based on m0nty’s fanplanner, as I do not have access to DT Assistant Coach! If anyone wants to update it, shout out, and get post an updated version.

Enjoy!

SC Substitute Teacher

Patrician, a fanfooty member, along with the help of CrowsFan are putting together a spreadsheet with all Sub statistics requirements!

The sheet will eventually have SC scores of every player who was subbed off, and everyone who started as a sub! Terrific stuff

And a reminder, here is the SC Team Selector! With a DT one in the works.

Purple 77 from fanfooty updated this selector, cheers for that!

Volcano Clouds Odds

Hi all! Unfortunately, I’m stranded in the beautiful island state of Tasmania. Although we do have electricity and the INTERNET now, we no longer have the ability of flight.

What does this have to do with you, you may ask?

Well, the code and program for running the premiership and head-to-head odds are stuck on the mainland, and as such, updated odds may not happen until the next round actually starts!

Collingwood having the bye this week – as well as injuries to key midfielders Mundy and Montagna, and the suspension of Joel Selwood – is likely to cause some strange results this week anyway.

So here is a gander at the fixture. As usual, there as some interest fixtures, and some not so interesting.

The League – now with Odds!

Hi everyone!

I’m nick_the_insane, a friend of ossie85 in the real world and part-time editor of this fine publication. If you look through and find one of your posts suddenly has more punctuation than you remember putting in it, that was probably me!

Our glorious leader ossie85 has given me the job of announcing the newest feature to this here blog. So here it is: finally, odds will be available, starting this week. He’ll be putting them up very soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

I wrote the code for this up a while ago for our own personal SuperCoach league last year, just for fun. It’s a pretty basic system – it works based on the scores you’ve made so far this season in either Dream Team and SuperCoach, and assumes that your scores are going to go pretty much on the same track as compared to everyone else’s. Obviously this isn’t hugely accurate, but I’m not getting paid for this so you’ll have to make do for now 😛 It runs a simulation of the entire season, including the finals, thousands of times (the technical term is Monte Carlo simulation), and from that it works out the chances of particular events happening. And from that, we can work out the odds a betting agency would give you for them (taking a little cream off the top, of course 😉 )

The odds that will be available will be for all matches played from here on in, and also the odds of any given team making the finals, winning the premiership, winning the wooden spoon – that kind of stuff. Hopefully it’ll give you a reasonable idea of how your team is faring. If you have any ideas or comments, or would like to know more information about how this works, let me know 🙂

– Nick

The Knock-Out Cup (Week 1)

Well, we have three weeks to fine-tune our teams, milk our cash-cows, wield the axe or simply just sit back. What we don’t have are any competitive matches.

Until now, that is!

In Rounds 4, 5, 6, 16 and 19 a Knock-Out Cup will be played. The concept is simple – win 5 matches and win the Cup! Each team is seeded according to the amount of points they have scored in the opening 3 rounds (NOT ladder position), and play-off in elimination. This isn’t Victoria v All-Stars, this is simply individual glory! This is the League’s equivalent to the NAB Cup.

Bazza Would be Proud

:( FanFooty :(

Hours! Hours and the fanfooty forum has been down. Anybody have any news on this? I’m starting to go through withdrawals!

EDIT: To log onto fanfooty, you need to sign in on the FRONT page, and then sign into the forum. Why? Only God (i.e. m0nty) knows.

Various spreadsheets still available for all who are interested, including:

Individual Coach Pages

Hello all!

If you hover over ‘The Big V’ and ‘The All-Stars’ links at the top of the page, you will see a list of all The League’s esteemed coaches. Click on one of these, and you’ll see that coaches fixture for the 2011 season, and some include brief profiles and team logos.

Feel free to make suggestions, comment, and whatever.

Enjoy!

If you’re anything like me and are not a fan of selecting teams off the SC and DT websites, check out these spreadsheets I put together. A bit rough around the edges, but should work ok!

If any problems, give me a comment below.

Fixture Update

Now we finally have a decent idea of who the coaches will be. Therefore I can start making up some fixtures!

The Victorian v Victorian and All-Star v All-Star matches will not be known until Round 1 kicks off for real, but have come up with the Victorian v All-Star matches.

Round 1 was randomised, and all other rounds follow on from that!

See the Fixtures page for all the detail!

A Sample of Team Logos

Some of the logos the coaches of The League have been working on! Let us know what you think.

First off, my team, the might of Ossie’s Antelopes, plays under this logo:

Photobucket

Esteemed Victorian coach – Alex7089 – has come up with an almost New Zealand themed logo 🙂

Using the DT Logo maker, Marcz is looking fearsome with this:

BoredSaint shows his allegiances to both St. Kilda and the All-Stars…

Bomberboy also shows his AFL allegiances with this jet-of-a-logo….

MajorLazer plays a bit of dodgeball with copyright for his team Average Joe’s Gym:

CrowsFan has a very impressive and intimidating logo, as his Matchbox Matadors look to impress:

And finally, hawk_88 did some very nice logos for the Victorians and All-Stars:

1 Day Left

1 Day Left Until Lift-Off! SC and DT open on the 1st of February.

The Leagues will open and start to be properly organised tomorrow. My esteemed Victorian (I know, it sounds like an oxymoron) counterpart Fletch74 has agreed to be administrator of the Victorian SC and DT leagues, while I will be admin for the All-Stars.

Once the final 16 teams in each of the 4 leagues are announced, the real fun can begin 🙂

Brainstorm!

First up, I’ve been busy having a holiday (finally) and melting in this horrible Canberran heat, and have sadly neglected my new website like a gambler leaving a baby in a hot car whilst playing the pokies.

As you can see, analogies are not my strong point!

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas/suggestions/hunches based on wild speculation/random thoughts about how we can improve this website?

What would you like to see more of?

Less of?

Or do you even care at all?

Happy Australia day all! Enjoy the cricket, cos next week the fun begins!

News and Odds

Very early days yet, but yesterday saw The League has its most views ever (thanks mum). So I’m liking that! We’ve had a few new coaches sign up to blog, and I think we will get more as the season gets closer.

So thanks naste, MajorLazer, junktimer, DazBurg, hawka26, bomberboy0618 and Hellopplz signing up as bloggers, and appreciate the comments from League coaches Boomz and McRooster also!

Make sure to leave your opinions about the Victorian v All-Stars Cup.

nicktheinsane – who is not a member of The League, but is our esteemed editor and mathematical whiz (thanks Oz 😛 – Ed) – is helping me come up with an odds system for not only this league, but for any league who wishes to see where each team stands in the premiership race.

It is a long way from starting, but basically after Round 6 we should be able to come up with something that makes sense (any fewer rounds and they’ll be practically meaningless). It will mean that all scores will have to be recorded, carefully! The program will simulate matches based on averages and standard deviation in order to determine the likely result of anything. For instance, last year after Round 13 these odds were made for the premiership for the league I was in:

$2.36 – Purple 77’s
$3.61 – Ossie’s Antelopes
$4.65 – Uber |\|0(|(|`/s
$17.96 – Pie Carnage
$27.41 – Sheedy’s Stars
$91.14 – Gramps Champs
$107.13 – DiBells HellsBells
$139.24 – @#%!
$176.04 – Psychotic Penguins
$201.78 – Nutty NeepyCats
$680.27 – Aud’s Hordes
$744.05 – Dad’s Army
NA – Essendon
NA – Geelong Cats
NA – jillians
NA – Sez’s Stuffups

Which were purely done on mathematics, with no human bias entering the equation. As it turned out the Grand Final was between Purple 77’s and Ossie’s Antelopes, with the 77’s winning, and the beaten prelim finalists were Uber |\|0(|(|`/s and Pie Carnage. So I guess it was fairly accurate! The NA meant that those teams were no chance of making the finals.

Are people keen for anything like this? The bye rounds will make things interesting, but are important for odds purposes.

Victorian v All-Stars Cup

Victorian v All-Stars Cup:

First, a bit of background:
When starting this competition, it soon became apparent that we’d have more than 16 teams. As such the 32 team league concept was created where everyone would get to play everyone.

However, the question was – how do we split the leagues? So we decided to bring back the old state-of-origin conceptand get a bit of friendly rivalry amongst it, and the two conferences would fight for the Victorian v All-Stars Cup.

The All-Stars are made up from Coaches all around Australia, and even coaches from Scotland and Canada! While the Victorians band together under the Big-V logo.

Initially I thought that we’d simply give the conference with the highest total points the Cup. But I’ve come to the conclusion that this is boring.

So I was thinking a points system:

Whenever you beat someone from the opposing conference, your conference gets 2 points (e.g. if McRooster, an All-Star, beats Hellopplz, a Vic, McRooster earns the All-Stars 2 points – a total of 512 points available)

The highest score of any given round gets 5 points (e.g. if Junktimer, a Vic, gets the highest score of the round, he earns the Victorians 5 points – a total of 120 points available)

The conference who scores the most points in any given round gets 10 points (a total of 240 points available).

And then:

Premiers get: 100 points
2nd: 50 points
3rd: 40
4th: 35
5th: 30
6th: 25
7th: 20
8th: 15
9th: 10
10th: 6
11th: 5
12th: 4
13th: 3
14th: 2
15th: 1
16th: 0
17th: 0
18th: -1
19th: -2
20th: -3
21st: -4
22nd: -5
23rd: -6
24th: -10
25th: -15
26th: -20
27th: -25
28th: -30
29th: -35
30th: -40
31st: -50
32nd: -100

Now, this is all very fluid. I’m asking for suggestions/changes. What else should points be awarded to?

And what should the cup be called?

Day 4: News

News:

North Melbourne Football Club is now following us. I think they follow everybody, but I’ll call it a win!

Not much else is happening, as you’d imagine, but esteemed coach Hellopplz last night recently put out a draft of his team. Hopefully he doesn’t mind me:

a) publishing it; and
b) giving some guidance to my poor misguided Victorian.

SuperCoach “Hello”

DEF: B. Deledio, C. Enright, L. Gilbee, C. Newman, S. Hurn, A. Otten, D. Heppell (B. Jacobs, P. Faulks, J. Toy)

MID: M. Murphy, S. Pendlebury, J. Watson, M. Boyd, D. Swallow, A. Gaff (M. Hibberd, T. Mzungu, L. Parker)

RUC: P. Ryder, D. Petrie (S. Lycett, Z. Smith)

FWD: P. Chapman, N. Riewoldt, A. Didak, M. Pavlich, A. Goodes, D. Prestia, J. Butcher (J. Darling, C. Dixon, A. Hooper)

CASH LEFT: $22,300

What I love about this team is that instead of the usual “Goddard, Deledio, Gibbs” combo that EVERY team has, he only has the one in Deledio. Gone for proven campaigners and consistency in Enright, Gilbee, Newman and Hurn, the returning from injury Andy Otten, and wonderkid Heppell.

His Mid is VERY strong. Swallow and Gaff are 2 stars, but Murphy, Pendlebury, Watson and Boyd are all very solid at the top.

Ruck is where the weakness is. Being a poor Bombers supporter with little to celebrate, HP has mistakenly thought that Ryder is a good option for a #1 ruck (j/k). In combination with the uncertainty of Petrie’s form (who IMO makes a great #5 or #6 forward), it will cause some issues!

Forward line: Star power at the top, and you can’t do much wrong! But then, starting two forward rookies – especially Butcher – could well, Butcher your team 🙂

I’m a fan of this team though 🙂

DreamTeam “Goodbye”

DEF: B. Goddard, H. Scotland, C. Enright, B. Deledio, G. Broughton, A. Otten, D. Heppell (M. Coad, P. Faulks, J. Toy)

MID: M. Boyd, L. Montagna, A. Swallow, D. Swallow, A. Gaff, J. Polec (B. Jacobs, L. Parker, T. Mzungu)

RUC: A. Sandilands, P. Ryder (S. Lycett, Z. Smith)

FWD: P. Chapman, A. Didak, C. Sylvia, M. Pavlich, C. Knights, D. Petrie, D. Prestia (I. Smith, J. Butcher, J. Darling)

CASH LEFT: $40,500

The major difference in structure with HP’s SuperCoach team is instead of having 4 premiums in the mid, he has 3 (which will again be a common thing this year, and probably the best tactic), and has upgraded to Sandi and Goddard in the ruck and defence.

Forward line is a bit more mid-priced, with Petrie strengthening it at #6, but Knights and Sylvia have some question marks!

Love the work HP 🙂 Sorry if I stole your thunder.

Day 3: News

DAY 3

Well, my quest to get a quote from an AFL player has so far failed 🙂 But I’m still hoping!

However, I did learn:

Gary Ablett is in Melbourne for his girlfriend’s birthday.
Aaron Joseph likes Zombieland.
Scott Pendlebury has an addiction to Coke Zero.
Andrew Welsh likes nice little waves.
David Zaharakis is spending the day watching NFL.

Ah, twitter. How you make even the best of us look pathetic. Any of these massive news stories change your mind on selecting any of them?

Speaking of pathetic – follow us on the twitter feed @league32 – the official twitter account of the Essendon Football Club is now a follower 🙂

Completely unrelated, but m0nty over at FanFooty has come up with a new fantasy game called Mr. Football, check it out! Should be great for all lovers of football.

Bit over 2 weeks until we can start having real fun on this site 🙂

What’s this all about?

Ok. Hello everybody! So what is this blog about? Well, Dream Team and Supercoach for the AFL, primarily. If you don’t know what these are, either click on the links and find out, or go away!

The leagues for SC and DT are made up from members of the website FanFooty (you should check it out, it’s great fun to talk, ask and give advice, and basically everything football – fantasy or otherwise). After the 2010 season finished, chrisuzz, a member of FanFooty, started up a thread seeking to create a “coaches” only league. On FanFooty, a coach is someone who is a regular and contributed to specific parts of the forum. Many people were keen to join this!

Unfortunately one of our coaches, elxam, tragically passed away. In memory of this quality poster and terrific person, it was decided to name this Coaches league after him.

As the off-season grew, so did the number of people wanting to participate in this league. It was decided to split both SC and DT into two leagues – Victorians and All-Stars – and have a 32 Team Competition. Each round, you play 1 person for your league and 1 person from the other league. The finals will consist of the best 16 teams, playing off in elimination for ultimate glory.

This blog will (hopefully) have many things to discuss. Including:
– Team analysis
– Statistics galore
– What went wrong and what went right
– Trades
– Odds (calculated with mathematics!)
– Coaches discussions

And much more. Hope you all enjoy, please visit FanFooty for preseason advice, and I stress we are not officially linked to this site, but thoroughly recommend it.
