Round 1 NAB Cup Stats

Which players provide the best value in the NAB Cup?

First off, for those who just want the raw stats, the SC and DT spreadsheets are here:

DT Nab Cup

SC Nab Cup

The following tables show the best value of players, based only on the first round of the NAB cup. It is calculated by dividing the price of the player, by the average amount of points they scored in round 1.

Couple of things to note;

– DT scores have been doubled. It was only half a match, and given I want to compare round 1’s matches with the rest of the NAB cup, I think the best way was to simply double it.

– The Giants are excluded from analysis, as obviously they don’t have a price! Three other players played on the weekend, but aren’t available for SC and DT selection, they are Travis Tuck and N. Ahmat-Watkins from Hawthorn, and Mitch Keddell from Richmond.

I’ve separated players into separate categories.

Rookies (DT players under $120k, SC players under $150k)

Cheap (DT between $120k and $240k, SC between $150k and $300k)

Mid-Pricers (DT between $240k and $360k, SC between $300k and $450k)

Premium (DT above $360k, SC above $450k)

Starting with DT players

DT Rookies (under $120k)

Name Team Pos Price Total Games Average $/Point
RICHARDSON, Cameron (NTH) F $97,600 202 2 101.00 966.34
SIMPKIN, Jonathan (GEE) M $80,400 164 2 82.00 980.49
MORAN, Brad (ADE) R $97,600 88 1 88.00 1109.09
STANLEY, Danny (GCS) D $106,400 180 2 90.00 1182.22
BOLTON, Jye (COL) M $80,400 136 2 68.00 1182.35
SCHNEIDER, Thomas (HAW) FM $80,400 126 2 63.00 1276.19
HARRIS, Daniel (GCS) M $114,400 174 2 87.00 1314.94
LOWER, Nick (FRE) D $92,500 136 2 68.00 1360.29
BROWNE, Alex (ESS) D $92,500 66 1 66.00 1401.52
MATERA, Brandon (GCS) F $97,600 136 2 68.00 1435.29

Cameron Richardson could be one of the bargains of the year, and should play a lot of matches for th Roos! Stanley, Harris and Matera represent good value from the Suns, and Schneider could be a cheap MPP that comes out of nowhere! I wouldn’t be confident that Simpkin and Stanley will get consistent games.

DT Cheap Players (between $120k and $240k)

Name Team Pos Price Total Games Average $/Point
TARRANT, Robbie (NTH) D $122,500 164 2 82.00 1493.90
BIRD, Craig (SYD) M $216,800 126 1 126.00 1720.63
GAMBLE, Ryan (STK) F $157,800 182 2 91.00 1734.07
HEPPELL, Dyson (ESS) DM $132,500 72 1 72.00 1840.28
BENNELL, Harley (GCS) M $156,500 152 2 76.00 2059.21
CRAMERI, Stewart (ESS) M $166,700 154 2 77.00 2164.94
HARWOOD, Ryan (BRL) M $205,600 94 1 94.00 2187.23
ASTBURY, David (RIC) DF $197,400 166 2 83.00 2378.31
SWALLOW, David (GCS) M $160,500 128 2 64.00 2507.81
SHELDON, Sam (BRL) M $183,500 70 1 70.00 2621.43

Everyone’s favourite pick David Swallow finds himself with some competition! Harley Bennell proved himself better value, while Tarrant, Bird and Gamble showed they have life in them! And Heppell’s an exciting talent.

DT Mid-Pricers (between $240k and $360k)

Name Team Pos Price Total Games Average $/Point
MCPHARLIN, Luke (FRE) DF $252,200 106 1 106.00 2379.25
SELWOOD, Scott (WCE) M $291,100 106 1 106.00 2746.23
KENNEDY, Josh (SYD) M $306,200 216 2 108.00 2835.19
COX, Dean (WCE) R $351,800 124 1 124.00 2837.10
HAWKINS, Tom (GEE) F $295,900 104 1 104.00 2845.19
MOLES, Brodie (WBD) M $282,400 98 1 98.00 2881.63
LYNCH, Quinten (WCE) F $282,700 96 1 96.00 2944.79
ELLARD, David (CAR) M $249,200 168 2 84.00 2966.67
BUTLER, Sam (WCE) M $243,800 80 1 80.00 3047.50
PICKEN, Liam (WBD) M $256,500 168 2 84.00 3053.57

Always tough to choose the mid-pricers, and I’m not too impressed with any of these players! Does big Cox still provide good value? It certainly looks like it! It would be a brave coach to select the Big Q.

DT Premiums (above $360k)

Name Team Pos Price Total Games Average $/Point
JOHNSON, Steve (GEE) F $393,000 140 1 140.00 2807.14
BROUGHTON, Greg (FRE) D $371,000 118 1 118.00 3144.07
MILBURN, Darren (GEE) D $382,900 110 1 110.00 3480.91
THOMPSON, Scott (ADE) M $398,300 100 1 100.00 3983.00
MURPHY, Marc (CAR) M $414,300 104 1 104.00 3983.65
WATSON, Jobe (ESS) M $394,100 98 1 98.00 4021.43
STANTON, Brent (ESS) M $413,200 194 2 97.00 4259.79
BARTEL, Jimmy (GEE) M $437,800 198 2 99.00 4422.22
BURGOYNE, Shaun (HAW) M $369,900 160 2 80.00 4623.75
PRIDDIS, Matt (WCE) M $388,400 166 2 83.00 4679.52

I reckon Jimmy Bartel could be even more of a star this year out of Ablett’s shadow! Murphy and Watson look like good selections, though both have bye issues late in the year!

SC Rookies (under $150k)

Name Team Pos Price Total Games Average $/Point
SCHNEIDER, Thomas (HAW) FM $91,700 201 2 100.50 912.44
NEATES, Ryan (WCE) M $110,200 109 1 109.00 1011.01
SHAW, Matthew (GCS) D $110,200 104 1 104.00 1059.62
BATCHELOR, Jake (RIC) D $103,600 194 2 97.00 1068.04
BOLTON, Jye (COL) M $91,700 170 2 85.00 1078.82
DERICKX, Tom (RIC) R $103,600 192 2 96.00 1079.17
PUOPOLO, Paul (HAW) D $103,600 191 2 95.50 1084.82
SIMPKIN, Jonathan (GEE) M $91,700 169 2 84.50 1085.21
HARRIS, Daniel (GCS) M $125,700 229 2 114.50 1097.82
STANLEY, Danny (GCS) D $117,700 213 2 106.50 1105.16

Gotta say, this list of players is a bit surprising! Is Derickx a good option at #4 ruck? Harris and Stanley are very much locked, and Matt Shaw has flown under the radar. Bolton and Simpkin may struggle to get regular games, but Schneider looks a bit of a surprise!

SC Cheap Players (between $150k and $300k)

Name Team Pos Price Total Games Average $/Point
BIRD, Craig (SYD) M $250,100 239 1 239.00 1046.44
HEPPELL, Dyson (ESS) DM $153,600 116 1 116.00 1324.14
GAMBLE, Ryan (STK) F $184,900 270 2 135.00 1369.63
SHELDON, Sam (BRL) M $204,400 129 1 129.00 1584.50
SWALLOW, David (GCS) M $188,600 236 2 118.00 1598.31
BENNELL, Harley (GCS) M $183,600 228 2 114.00 1610.53
CRAMERI, Stewart (ESS) M $256,300 296 2 148.00 1731.76
LAIDLER, Jeremy (CAR) D $279,300 156 1 156.00 1790.38
TARRANT, Robbie (NTH) D $184,900 196 2 98.00 1886.73
ASTBURY, David (RIC) DF $229,800 229 2 114.50 2006.99

I wouldn’t pay much attention to Craig Bird’s massive score, playing against the Giants will do wonders for your score! Gamble played very well though, and Swallow and Bennell are living up to their names of #1 and #2 draft picks!

SC Mid-Pricers (between $300k and $450k)

Name Team Pos Price Total Games Average $/Point
ZAHARAKIS, David (ESS) FM $337,900 156 1 156.00 2166.03
HAWKINS, Tom (GEE) F $381,200 170 1 170.00 2242.35
KENNEDY, Josh (SYD) M $394,100 344 2 172.00 2291.28
LYNCH, Quinten (WCE) F $314,200 137 1 137.00 2293.43
JOHNSON, Steve (GEE) F $436,900 182 1 182.00 2400.55
MCPHARLIN, Luke (FRE) DF $337,400 140 1 140.00 2410.00
DANGERFIELD, Patrick (ADE) FM $340,100 276 2 138.00 2464.49
MCVEIGH, Mark (ESS) M $342,800 133 1 133.00 2577.44
REID, Ben (COL) D $322,900 246 2 123.00 2625.20
SELWOOD, Scott (WCE) M $315,800 115 1 115.00 2746.09

Everyone is mad about Zaharakis, and I’m starting to be convinced myself. Patrick Dangerfield is a decent option also, and maybe even Mark McVeigh as a smokie under James Hird.

SC Premiums (above $450k)

Name Team Pos Price Total Games Average $/Point
MILBURN, Darren (GEE) D $480,400 172 1 172.00 2793.02
BROUGHTON, Greg (FRE) D $479,800 169 1 169.00 2839.05
MURPHY, Marc (CAR) M $544,500 165 1 165.00 3300.00
GIANSIRACUSA, Daniel (WBD) F $451,600 263 2 131.50 3434.22
WATSON, Jobe (ESS) M $520,400 146 1 146.00 3564.38
CORNES, Kane (PTA) M $496,800 130 1 130.00 3821.54
MCVEIGH, Jarrad (SYD) M $456,500 235 2 117.50 3885.11
RIOLI, Cyril (HAW) F $461,500 229 2 114.50 4030.57
BARTEL, Jimmy (GEE) M $497,000 234 2 117.00 4247.86
GOODES, Adam (SYD) FM $458,900 206 2 103.00 4455.34

Couple of interesting premiums amongst this list! Milburn is just ageless, while Kane Cornes keeps plugging away. Adam Goodes could still be a great option, but he didn’t play much competition on the weekend. I like the look of Greg Broughton also!
