Round 1 NAB Cup Stats
Which players provide the best value in the NAB Cup?
First off, for those who just want the raw stats, the SC and DT spreadsheets are here:
The following tables show the best value of players, based only on the first round of the NAB cup. It is calculated by dividing the price of the player, by the average amount of points they scored in round 1.
Couple of things to note;
– DT scores have been doubled. It was only half a match, and given I want to compare round 1’s matches with the rest of the NAB cup, I think the best way was to simply double it.
– The Giants are excluded from analysis, as obviously they don’t have a price! Three other players played on the weekend, but aren’t available for SC and DT selection, they are Travis Tuck and N. Ahmat-Watkins from Hawthorn, and Mitch Keddell from Richmond.
I’ve separated players into separate categories.
Rookies (DT players under $120k, SC players under $150k)
Cheap (DT between $120k and $240k, SC between $150k and $300k)
Mid-Pricers (DT between $240k and $360k, SC between $300k and $450k)
Premium (DT above $360k, SC above $450k)
Starting with DT players
DT Rookies (under $120k)
Name | Team | Pos | Price | Total | Games | Average | $/Point |
RICHARDSON, Cameron | (NTH) | F | $97,600 | 202 | 2 | 101.00 | 966.34 |
SIMPKIN, Jonathan | (GEE) | M | $80,400 | 164 | 2 | 82.00 | 980.49 |
MORAN, Brad | (ADE) | R | $97,600 | 88 | 1 | 88.00 | 1109.09 |
STANLEY, Danny | (GCS) | D | $106,400 | 180 | 2 | 90.00 | 1182.22 |
BOLTON, Jye | (COL) | M | $80,400 | 136 | 2 | 68.00 | 1182.35 |
SCHNEIDER, Thomas | (HAW) | FM | $80,400 | 126 | 2 | 63.00 | 1276.19 |
HARRIS, Daniel | (GCS) | M | $114,400 | 174 | 2 | 87.00 | 1314.94 |
LOWER, Nick | (FRE) | D | $92,500 | 136 | 2 | 68.00 | 1360.29 |
BROWNE, Alex | (ESS) | D | $92,500 | 66 | 1 | 66.00 | 1401.52 |
MATERA, Brandon | (GCS) | F | $97,600 | 136 | 2 | 68.00 | 1435.29 |
Cameron Richardson could be one of the bargains of the year, and should play a lot of matches for th Roos! Stanley, Harris and Matera represent good value from the Suns, and Schneider could be a cheap MPP that comes out of nowhere! I wouldn’t be confident that Simpkin and Stanley will get consistent games.
DT Cheap Players (between $120k and $240k)
Name | Team | Pos | Price | Total | Games | Average | $/Point |
TARRANT, Robbie | (NTH) | D | $122,500 | 164 | 2 | 82.00 | 1493.90 |

CRAMERI, Stewart | (ESS) | M | $166,700 | 154 | 2 | 77.00 | 2164.94 |
HARWOOD, Ryan | (BRL) | M | $205,600 | 94 | 1 | 94.00 | 2187.23 |

SWALLOW, David | (GCS) | M | $160,500 | 128 | 2 | 64.00 | 2507.81 |
SHELDON, Sam | (BRL) | M | $183,500 | 70 | 1 | 70.00 | 2621.43 |
Everyone’s favourite pick David Swallow finds himself with some competition! Harley Bennell proved himself better value, while Tarrant, Bird and Gamble showed they have life in them! And Heppell’s an exciting talent.
DT Mid-Pricers (between $240k and $360k)
Name | Team | Pos | Price | Total | Games | Average | $/Point |

HAWKINS, Tom | (GEE) | F | $295,900 | 104 | 1 | 104.00 | 2845.19 |
MOLES, Brodie | (WBD) | M | $282,400 | 98 | 1 | 98.00 | 2881.63 |
LYNCH, Quinten | (WCE) | F | $282,700 | 96 | 1 | 96.00 | 2944.79 |
ELLARD, David | (CAR) | M | $249,200 | 168 | 2 | 84.00 | 2966.67 |
BUTLER, Sam | (WCE) | M | $243,800 | 80 | 1 | 80.00 | 3047.50 |
PICKEN, Liam | (WBD) | M | $256,500 | 168 | 2 | 84.00 | 3053.57 |
Always tough to choose the mid-pricers, and I’m not too impressed with any of these players! Does big Cox still provide good value? It certainly looks like it! It would be a brave coach to select the Big Q.

PRIDDIS, Matt | (WCE) | M | $388,400 | 166 | 2 | 83.00 | 4679.52 |
I reckon Jimmy Bartel could be even more of a star this year out of Ablett’s shadow! Murphy and Watson look like good selections, though both have bye issues late in the year!

HARRIS, Daniel | (GCS) | M | $125,700 | 229 | 2 | 114.50 | 1097.82 |
STANLEY, Danny | (GCS) | D | $117,700 | 213 | 2 | 106.50 | 1105.16 |
Gotta say, this list of players is a bit surprising! Is Derickx a good option at #4 ruck? Harris and Stanley are very much locked, and Matt Shaw has flown under the radar. Bolton and Simpkin may struggle to get regular games, but Schneider looks a bit of a surprise!

ASTBURY, David | (RIC) | DF | $229,800 | 229 | 2 | 114.50 | 2006.99 |
I wouldn’t pay much attention to Craig Bird’s massive score, playing against the Giants will do wonders for your score! Gamble played very well though, and Swallow and Bennell are living up to their names of #1 and #2 draft picks!
SC Mid-Pricers (between $300k and $450k)

Everyone is mad about Zaharakis, and I’m starting to be convinced myself. Patrick Dangerfield is a decent option also, and maybe even Mark McVeigh as a smokie under James Hird.

Couple of interesting premiums amongst this list! Milburn is just ageless, while Kane Cornes keeps plugging away. Adam Goodes could still be a great option, but he didn’t play much competition on the weekend. I like the look of Greg Broughton also!
